Sonia Schreiber Weitz, a Holocaust survivor, was remembered yesterday as a quiet hero who spent decades traveling from her beloved North Shore home to change the hearts of thousands of schoolchildren.

Weitz died Wednesday at her home in Peabody, surrounded by her family. She was 81.
After years in Nazi death camps, Weitz devoted her life in America to fighting genocide. In 1981 Weitz co-founded the Holocaust Center Boston North Inc.’s Center for the Study of Human Rights and helped organize the center’s Holocaust Legacy Partner Project, which records survivors’ testimonials.
She was the education director of the center for many years.
